Nelly Kamala Harris supporters faced strong criticism from the rapper. Nelly is still dealing with backlash for performing at an event for Donald Trump’s inauguration. On Instagram, Nelly expressed his thoughts directly. He wrote, “Some of y’all have a problem with [us] because the prosecutor who has probably locked up more Black men that we’ve helped woman of color with the white husband and white kids did not win the election.”
He clearly clarified his position. “I did not campaign for anyone,” Nelly stated. “I do not tell people who to vote for. I respect and love our country from top to bottom good and bad.” Furthermore, Nelly noted that “it’s a lot of things we need to work on the right is too far right and the left is too far left.”
Nelly shared a personal detail: he is “a military baby.” He mentioned his grand uncle was a Tuskegee airman. This relative was “very prideful in his country.” Nelly respects the presidential office. Therefore, he believes “any president that calls on Nelly it would be an honor.” He insisted his choice had “nothing to do with money. Nothing to do with race.” However, he challenged those making it about race. He found it “very interesting. That’s so many of you would dump on two Black men that’s married to Black women that has Black children because the woman of color with the white husband and white kids didn’t win.”
Nelly’s decision to perform for Trump also caused issues at home. Indeed, Ashanti’s mother, Tina, made it clear she was not happy about Nelly performing at Donald Trump’s second inauguration. Ashanti attempted to explain Nelly’s reasoning for appearing at the inauguration. She said, “This is more about the opportunity of performing at the White House as opposed to performing for a particular candidate.” Tina, however, found the situation deeply emotional. She said, “This is very emotional for me,” as she thought about the civil rights struggle. She also reflected on her own father’s involvement in 1960s activism. Ultimately, this shows the personal impact of such political choices. The strong words exchanged highlight the ongoing debate surrounding public figures and their political affiliations.
