Hip-hop history is filled with wild studio sessions, but the newly revealed LL Cool J ODB plaques story might just take the crown. First, LL Cool J recently joined SiriusXM’s Salute the Sample to recount one of the most bizarre and hilarious phone calls of his entire career, involving the late, great Wu-Tang Clan legend Ol’ Dirty Bastard.
The story started with a frantic phone call from Chris Lighty. The late music executive told LL Cool J to rush to Chung King Studios in New York City immediately.
Suddenly, ODB had stormed into the recording studio in a total rage. According to Lighty, the Wu-Tang rapper ripped LL’s gold and platinum plaques off the walls. After that, he actually proceeded to urinate on them.
Most artists would be furious about their awards being ruined. In contrast, LL Cool J had a surprisingly different reaction.
In fact, the Queens rap legend admitted the situation was just too absurd. Therefore, he could only laugh about the destruction. “I didn’t even understand it,” LL explained during the broadcast. “Loved him ever since. Shout out to Ol’ Dirty, man!”
So, why did this happen? Before his death, Chris Lighty provided the missing context. He shared the details during a 2006 interview with Stuff Magazine.
Specifically, he revealed exactly what caused ODB’s destructive outburst:
This viral memory arrives at a perfect time. Currently, LL Cool J is preparing to host his Rock the Bells Festival. This massive event will hit Long Island’s UBS Arena on August 15.
The promoters have not announced the official lineup yet. Still, stories like this keep the golden era of hip-hop alive.
Ultimately, the music industry loves unexpected surprises. This rule applies to 90s rap stories and modern pop culture shocks, like the recent Taylor Swift Travis Kelce wedding. Finally, you can track all upcoming festival news over on Billboard.
