Kendrick Lamar’s Historic Night: Unforgettable Victories at the 2024 BET Awards

Kendrick Lamar led the recent BET Awards in Los Angeles. This show celebrates Black actors, singers, and sports stars. Lamar won five awards out of ten nominations. He took home Best Album for GNX and Best Video for “Not Like Us.” He also won Best Male Hip-Hop Artist. Lamar and filmmaker Dave Free also won Video Director of the Year.

Lamar spoke at the awards, hosted by Kevin Hart. He said, “BET has always made sure they’re representing the culture right and always put me in the midst of the cycle of what we represent.” His words showed the network’s strong commitment to Black culture.

Voices Heard: Protest and Resilience

The ceremony was more than just awards. It was a stage for important messages. Rapper Doechii won Best Female Hip-Hop Artist. She used her time to criticize US President Donald Trump. She spoke about him using military forces to stop protests in Los Angeles. This happened after recent Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids in Latino areas. Doechii added, “I want y’all to consider what kind of government it appears to be, when every time we exercise our democratic rights to protest, the military is deployed against us.” Her words highlight a serious concern about democratic rights.

Lamar also won big at last year’s BET Hip-Hop Awards. He took home eight awards from eleven nominations then.

Honoring Icons: Music, Film, and Impact

The show also gave Ultimate Icon Awards. These awards honor achievement in music, entertainment, advocacy, and community. This year’s honorees included singers Mariah Carey, Snoop Dogg, and Kirk Franklin. Actor Jamie Foxx also received this top prize.

Jamie Foxx got his award from Stevie Wonder. Foxx spoke about his recovery after having a stroke in 2023. He shared, “I gotta be honest, when I saw the in memoriam [segment], I was like, ‘Man, that could have been me’.” His honest words showed his strength.

Mariah Carey also performed at the awards. Busta Rhymes gave her the icon award. She said, “This means so much. If you’re gonna get one, might as well start with the Ultimate Icon Award.” Carey called her life and career “quite the adventure.” She praised her fellow icon winners.

Other Key Winners and Performances

“Wicked” star Cynthia Erivo won Best Actress. Veteran actor Denzel Washington, from “Gladiator II,” won Best Actor.

The ceremony also featured great music. R&B artist Ashanti performed her songs, including her 2002 hit “Foolish.” Lil Kim performed “Left Eye (Remix)” with Honey Bxby. Other artists like Jim Jones, Amerie, Keyshia Cole, and Mya also performed. B2K and Bow Wow joined Jermaine Dupri on stage too.
