2025 F1 Las Vegas Grand Prix: Verstappen Wins, Title Blow for McLaren after Double DQ

Max Verstappen stormed to a commanding victory on the streets of Las Vegas, but the headline story exploded five hours after the checkered flag dropped. In a stunning twist, both Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri were disqualified for technical infringements, breathing new life into Verstappen’s title defense.

The Race: Verstappen Dominates, Chaos at Turn 1

The drama began the moment the lights went out. Pole-sitter Lando Norris attempted to cover off Verstappen into Turn 1 but ran wide, opening the door for the Red Bull driver to seize the lead. Verstappen never looked back, controlling the pace to take his seventh victory of the season.

Behind the leaders, the first corner claimed its first victims. Gabriel Bortoleto (Kick Sauber) misjudged his braking point and slammed into Lance Stroll (Aston Martin). Both drivers retired on the spot, and Bortoleto has been handed a 5-place grid penalty for the upcoming Qatar Grand Prix for causing the collision.

Midfield Battles & Recoveries

  • Lewis Hamilton’s Charge: After a disastrous qualifying left him starting P20, Hamilton put in a vintage recovery drive. Despite complaining of brake issues and surviving contact with Alex Albon, the Ferrari-bound driver carved through the field to cross the line in 10th (promoted to 8th).
  • Antonelli’s Mixed Bag: Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli had a rollercoaster night. He initially received a 5-second time penalty for a false start (jump start) but drove a brilliant race to finish 4th on the road.
  • Williams Woes: It was a nightmare evening for Alex Albon. A total radio failure meant he had to rely on old-school pit boards for communication. After contact with Hamilton and sustaining damage, the team retired the car on Lap 35 for safety reasons.

Post-Race Bombshell: McLaren Disqualified

Long after the podium celebrations, FIA technical delegates found that the planks (skid blocks) on both McLaren cars had worn away beyond the legal limit of 9mm.

The disqualification of Norris (who crossed the line 2nd) and Piastri (4th) reshuffled the entire top 10:

  • George Russell was promoted to P2.
  • Kimi Antonelli was promoted to P3, securing a double podium for Mercedes.
  • Charles Leclerc moved up to P4.

Championship Standings: Title Fight Reset

The double DQ is a catastrophe for McLaren. Instead of extending his lead, Norris scored zero points.

  • Lando Norris: 390 points
  • Max Verstappen: 366 points (-24)
  • Oscar Piastri: 366 points (-24)

Verstappen, who was on the ropes, is now just 24 points behind with two race weekends remaining.

What’s Next?

The paddock heads immediately to the Qatar Grand Prix next week, which features a Sprint race. With 34 points on offer (8 for Sprint, 25 for Race + 1 Fastest Lap), the title momentum has swung violently back toward Red Bull.
